Mamma Can Do It - Fit Pants Pattern Men's

Sometimes on the few occasions I sew for my husband, he can be quite uncooperative when I want to take photos.  Today was this day.  It had nothing to do with the pattern or how it looked.  He just doesn't want his photo all over the internet.  Fair enough.  However, it doesn't help when you are pattern testing for a company.

I was accepted to test the pattern: Fit Pants Pattern Men's - Mamma Can Do It I made it in an unknown knit which had a suitable stretch for this pattern.

What my husband particularly liked about this pattern were the deep front pockets.  His comments were that they were good because nothing would fall out, as so often do with ready to wear clothes in the stores.

He did not want me to add the back pockets unless they had a zip on them like RTW.  Perhaps next time he will get this wish.  Again, he felt that pockets in the back would be useless unless they had a zip otherwise the pockets were there just as a decoration and would not be terribly secure.  Fair comments.

This pattern was very easy to sew, and instructions logical and easy to follow.

This pattern comes in multiple leg width options (skinny, regular and wide) - we chose the regular width, faux fly, multiple length and an optional low rise, there is also a Fit Worksheet to help you make a custom sized pair if you wish!  I made these in a size 41, however, I think I could have sized down.

In my next make of this I would like to find a knit that gives the look of a jeans fabric.

I enjoyed making the pants and would recommend it to you.  An easy sew and I hope your husband or partner is not as fussy as mine!

Happy sewing everyone.

Sandra

Challenges 2018

So, what's ahead for 2018?  I've alread joined the Goodbye Valentino RTW challenge.  No, that just wasn't enough, was it?  I've also joined the Curvy Sewing Collective, Curvy Year of Sewing.  It didn't end there, I also have been pattern testing.

Even though this is a public challenge, it is also a personal one.  As I have a lot of experience, I am not looking at easy sewing, I want to push my boundaries, try different pattern companies, and try to sew some things that I've always said, "I'd like to try ...."

Jan/Feb - while pattern testing for Sinclair Patterns, I came across another sewer (who I think was pattern testing for another company) who was wearing Winter Wear Designs - Real Deal Jeans.  Since her body type was curvy, I've decided that this will be what I will sew first.  Not that they are difficult to do, just that I haven't tried this company before, I like the look of the pattern, but I probably, normally would steer away from pants because of my tummy region.

I have made them up as shorts and as full length jeans (oops, I missed the first deadline as I got caught up in pattern testing and the weather has been so hot here that I haven't quite done as much sewing as I would like. Oh well, I'II get on board for March/April, in the meantime, here are my jeans and shorts for Jan/Feb:

I found this pattern successful on a number of fronts:

  1. After botched surgery and eventually having a double hernia operation as a result of this I find that my tummy hangs so I steer away from wearing any form of pants, so now I have moved towards wearing pants.
  2. I have problem solved how to successfully use top stitching thread without it breaking or pulling on the fabric. I have conquered my fear of this.
  3. I continue to try and challenge myself and improve my skills.
  4. I have altered the width of the pants leg as, although me tummy is big, I am fortunate to have toned legs.  On godsend at least.
Anyhow, hope all is well in your sewing world.

Happy sewing.

Sandra

Winter Wear Designs - Blithe Blouse and Dress

I first came across Winter Wear Designs patterns, whilst testing patterns for another company.  Another tester was wearing a pattern for jeans that I liked.  My experience with making the jeans encouraged me to try out other patterns with Winter Wear Designs.

I wanted to make a shirt dress and I liked the style of the Winter Wear Designs Blithe Blouse and Dress.

When travelling to Singapore last December I picked up an indigo print that I thought would work well with this dress. A light weight polyester in an indigo colour with flecks through it.

I was so pleased with the sizing of the jeans I'd previously made, that without checking the sizing on the blouse dress I went ahead and cut the largest size in this pattern.  I just assumed that it would fit me.  (You can see already what's about to come).  I made it up, but could not figure out why it did not fit me across the shoulders, it kept pulling to the back.  It fit me everywhere else, except for the shoulders.

I took out the sleeves, put them back, and then the light bulb moment, maybe I should check the pattern sizing?

BINGO, that's why it didn't fit.  A rooky mistake, never make assumptions.  I blame no one but myself.

I had a busy term last term.  I started a new job, teaching new subjects, that and taking on pattern testing and I wanted to sew patterns that I wanted to sew, and this was one of them, so in a rush I just cut it making assumptions about sizing. Cut it, sewed it ....  lesson learnt.

I will make this shirt dress again.  It is a very nice pattern, despite the pulling at the shoulders looks good one, except now, I may have to loose some weight for it to fit around the shoulders. Oh well.  I like the way the placket comes together.  I learnt some valuable lessons here.

If you are looking for a shirt dress pattern, try this, just don't make the rooky mistake I made!  I definitely will be trying this one again.

Give it a try, I think this pattern would look good with pantyhose and heels or with leggings.

Anyhow, I've moved on from my error.

Happy sewing everyone.

Sandra

S1071 Sinclair Patterns Moon wide leg woven pull on pants, culottes and shorts

It's April, as it is everywhere in the world, but, it's meant to be Autumn here in Melbourne, Australia.  It's incredibly warmer than usual.  Our usual weather in Melbourne at the moment should be warm, sunny days and cool nights.  Someone needs to tell mother nature that something is wrong.  We haven't had rain in a while.  Maybe I should wash the car - it usually rains after I do that!

I had the pleasure of testing the S1071 Sinclair Patterns Moon wide leg woven pull on pants, culottes and shorts.  At the time I decided on the shorts the weather here was even warmer than it is now and I couldn't bear the thought of a longer pant.  You know how it is when the weather just is too hot for too long, you need clothes that are easy and comfortable to wear.  These pants meet that category exactly.  With easy to follow instructions these pants come together easily.  Their fit is comfortable and an easy sew.

I have an idea for a hack of this pattern, if only I could find that piece of fabric I want to make it in!

I'd recommend making this pattern, they are a pull on pant in a woven fabric from my stash, a type of suiting fabric.

Some background to taking these photos. On the day we took these photos, my husband and I were walking back from grabbing a coffee.  On the way home we passed a second hand store and saw this beautiful hat box, since it had original stickers on it from the 1950s and was in great condition, we picked it up.  We then passed a section where it was quiet and I thought would make a good back drop for my photos.

I also attended the Australian Quilt Convention at the Exhibition Buildings last weekend and to give you an idea of the weather, here's a photo of my favourite fountain:

Anyhow, I'm in my last week of term break, so I better get back to some sewing.

Happy sewing everyone.

Sandra
